Tiina Puumalainen and Hanna Suutela’s historical drama-comedy Kaarlo Bergbomin kootut kärsimykset (The Collected Sorrows of Kaarlo Bergbom) dives into the fascinating early days of Finnish language theatre.
A momentous day cometh in April of 1902: the cornerstone of Finnish language civilisation, The Finnish Theatre, finally has its own building! On the eve of the grand opening, though, both the programme and the venue are decidedly unfinished.
Co-written by Tiina Puumalainen and Hanna Suutela, Kaarlo Bergbomin kootut kärsimykset is a wistful and convivial pean to theatre, and Finnish language culture. Combining music, visual theatre, and choreography, the performance is an imaginative spectacle featuring historical characters, both famous and less well-known, all doing battle for culture in the hostile environment of oppressed Finland.
The production is directed Tiina Puumalainen and the set design is by Teppo Järvinen, the founding partners of The Wild Company theatre collective. The award-winning collective is best-known for its holistic stage aesthetics.
