A Comedy on the Ruins of Greek Myths
Written by Jussi Moila and directed by Juhana von Bagh, Jumalat (Gods) is a carnivalesque comedy about European identity, here and now. At its core are ancient Greek myths that continue to live and breathe in us.
Internationally renowned director, Anneli von Griechen, is working on her visionary interpretation of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King at a major Finnish theatre. It soon transpires that this Oedipus is nothing like what the theatre thought had been commissioned.
As it happens, Anneli is the mother of the theatre’s director Basil “Pasi” von Griechen, and their artistic differences soon become personal. The fact that Krista, Anneli’s daughter and Pasi’s half-sister, is also in the play only stirs up things even more. Unresolved family issues, ambition, and irreconcilable differences of opinion become tangled into a plotline that bears an uncanny resemblance to Greek god mythology.
Jumalat is an artistic tour de force combining choreography, costumes by Minttu Vesala, set design by Kati Lukka, and music and sound design by Tatu Nenonen. A star-studded cast brings this energetic and visually glamorous performance to life.
